Meet Theodora, the parent who prereads your kid’s books

I read children’s books before your kids do, so you know what’s inside, what’s worth their time, and how to talk about it with them.

In 2020, my son, then in 3rd grade and no fan of books, brought home a 300-page novel from the school library. He read it, then read it again. Curious, I read it too. It was a wonderful book. It also dealt with a terminal illness in the family and a teenager’s first romantic confusion, two big topics he hadn’t said a word to me about.

From that day on, I started reading every book that came into our home. I wasn’t doing it to police or ban anything. I wanted to be prepared and engaged with my kids. That habit grew into My Kid Reader.

  • Honest, quick summaries – the plot, themes, and takeaways of each book, readable in 60 seconds, so you don’t have to rely on book jackets or endless online reviews.
  • Questions to start a conversation – good prompts to talk with your child about a book, even if you haven’t read it.
  • Hand-picked books – curated reading through the Book Box, matched to your child, so they discover the best of kids’ literature.

Since 2020 I’ve read 500+ children’s books of every genre, length, and quality. Authors have responded to and shared my reviews, publishers send me manuscripts, and parents follow along on Instagram and through my newsletter.

Not every book is equally good, and that’s fine. We carefully choose everything else our kids do every day, so what they read (and they read a lot) deserves the same care.

  • I’m not a librarian, teacher, or author. I’m a parent who loves literature, and that’s the point.
  • I graduated from a leading liberal arts college in the Northeast.
  • I spent over a decade in investment banking and another decade in higher education.
  • I’m raising two boys who devour every genre.
  • I believe in informed choices, not book bans.
  • If I had all the time in the world, I’d read books all day. Oh wait, I already do!
