Clementine

She’s creative, clever, attentive, loving and helpful. She also pays close attention – just not always to what the teachers expect her to! Engrossing, funny stories from a third grader’s very busy life – though unclear if they’re funnier for the kid readers or for their parents…

SYNOPSIS

When Clementine’s best friend Margaret sticks glue in her hair, Clementine helps Margaret cut off all her hair and paints her scalp and neck orange; she also gets rid of her own hair and paints her head bright green.

Her good deeds are not always as disastrous.

She invents games for her younger brother; runs chores for the elderly neighbor; brainstorms ways to rid the building of pigeon droppings; and makes an amazing hat for Margaret.

At times she may be misunderstood, but Clementine’s different viewpoint saves the day time and again.

PERFECT AGE 7-10

We love

  • A beautiful description of the world from the viewpoint of a child – a good reminder that we (grown-up’s) are often unclear, sometimes too strict, and not creative enough
  • Let’s be honest – just because a solution to a problem looks terrible to a grown-up doesn’t mean it’s not brilliant; Margaret is happy with a hairless painted-on head; why is her mom so upset?!
  • Clementine’s mom is a role model of kindness, understanding and fun!

CONVERSATION STARTERS

  • How would you describe Clementine? Would you want to be her friend? Why?
  • Clementine seems to often know how people feel and how to help them. Can you think of a few examples?
  • Why does Clementine use so many funny names for her brother?
  • Why do you think Clementine was worried about the surprise party?
