SYNOPSIS

Her older brother and sister may have little patience for Dory (known as Rascal at home) but her two awesome and reliable friends – Mary the monster and Mr. Nuggy the fairy godmother – are always ready to play.

Dory, Mary, and Mr. Nuggy battle the various misdeeds of sharp-toothed witch Mrs. Gobble Gracker despite the family’s rules, restrictions and disbelief.

(1st in a 5-book series)

PERFECT AGE 6 – 9

THEMES

  • Just because others can’t see things like magical friends, that doesn’t mean they’re not real.
  • Being brave and creative can get you out of many a pickle!
  • True friends are always loyal and willing to help, even when the enemy is a scary toothy witch.

We love

  • You’ll find yourself siding with Dory against her (tired, stressed out, low on patience) parents time and again. She’s a rascal just like the one(s) in your house – and she will never make you cringe or yell!
  • Dory’s bottomless imagination, excitement for adventure and serious spunk!
  • The beautiful black&white illustrations are perfectly nestled into the text to form a key part of the story.

WATCH OUT FOR (Language, Big / Sensitive Topics, Outdated Concepts):

  • If your child gets spooked by witches, etc., it may be helpful to preface the story with a clarfication – Mrs. Gobble Gracker lives in our imagination and never does anything malicious to Dory.

CONVERSATION STARTERS

  • Why do Violet and Luke seem so impatient with Dory? Can you give them some advice about how to be better siblings to her?
  • If you had an imaginary friend, what would their name and powers be?
  • What animal have you ever turned into, and was that fun? How did you turn back into a human?
