SYNOPSIS

In 6th grade, Raina has an accident and loses her two front teeth.

So instead of simple braces, like all her friends, she begins a 3-year-long, torturous and complicated process of getting new teeth.

Self-consciousness because of her teeth, physical pain, and unrequited romantic feelings impact Raina’s self-esteem, grades and mood at home.

Thanks to her friends, she is able to cope and even tries new adventures like basketball tryouts (she doesn’t make the team).

As high school begins, Raina has learned to stand up for herself and focus on her inner strengths and talents, rather than her appearance.

And soon enough, the braces are off and Raina finally has a brilliant, radiant SMILE!

We love

  • Everything about Raina!
  • The author’s personal unvarnished experiences into a topic books don’t really focus on – yet is so big for this age group!
  • Glorious and hysterical illustrations – especially of the good, bad and ugly (mostly bad and ugly) in ortho work 🙂
  • Middle school is portrayed here with understanding and close knowledge. A great reminder for adults about what a difficult time this is!
